OMEGA 3 EPA
Cardiovascular support:
Omega-3 EPA, together with Omega-3 DHA, contributes to the maintenance of normal blood
triglyceride levels as well as normal heart function (+ of 2g). Specifically, Omega-3 EPA has
received significant media attention in the world of science following the results of major studies
that have highlighted its relevance in supporting cardiovascular health.
IMPORTANT NOTE: those taking anticoagulants should be cautious with the use of Omega-3 EPA
in high doses (e.g. 2.5-3g EPA/ day). It is also important to pay attention to cardiovascular health
in women, especially after menopause, due to the loss of cardiovascular protection that occurs
with the decrease in estrogen.
Joint and muscle support:
Muscle and joint wear and tear associated with the passage of time results in osteomuscular
alterations that affect the quality of life of many adults (e.g. arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis
etc.). In situations such as those described, diet plays a fundamental role, since the abuse of
certain omega-6 fats present in dairy products, meats, processed foods, sausages, etc., often
generates an imbalance at the cellular level, which can slow down the recovery from this type
of situation. Omega-3 EPA will help to counteract this imbalance in our diet.
Omega-3 EPA in sports:
During the practice of sports of intense physical activity, ‘microinflammations’ or silent
inflammations derived from the high stress to which muscles and joints are subjected are
common. As previously indicated, Omega-3 EPA is capable of providing a nutritional balance of
fats in our diet, which will bring greater well-being to athletes, being an essential nutrient for an
optimal performance in sports.
Traumatic brain injury:
After a blow, accident, concussion… Omega-3 EPA, together with Omega-3 DHA, will help a
faster recovery.
OMEGA-3 DHA
Pregnancy
Pregnancy: Omega-3 DHA is a fundamental support in pregnancy (essential for the formation of
the brain and visual system of the fetus).
Maternal recovery after childbirth: often the mother’s Omega-3 DHA levels are severely
depleted after pregnancy and this can contribute to post-partum depression. Therefore, taking
Omega-3 DHA supplements will help to recover the mother’s DHA levels and reduce the chances
of postpartum depression.
Breastfeeding: the mother transmits to the baby, through her milk, the Omega-3 DHA that she
may be taking; so it is important that the mother takes enough Omega-3 DHA, and thus continue
to support the brain and visual development of her baby.
Artificial feeding: Omega-3 DHA is essential after birth, to support good brain development; it
can be added to the baby’s milk bottle.
Children
Nutritional dosage in young children (>6 months onwards): it is important to maintain a correct
nutritional dose of Omega-3 DHA during infancy, as the brain continues to form until the age of
6 years, and then once school age has begun. An optimal cognitive development will contribute
to a better quality of attention/concentration at school age, hence the importance of providing
nutrients such as Omega-3 DHA, capable of ensuring normal brain development.
Children with learning and/or behavioral problems: in these cases it is essential to reinforce the
daily Omega-3 DHA doses, to reinforce the cognitive function.
Brain
Adolescents & adults: Omega-3 DHA is a necessary nutrient for reinforcement in teenagers and
adults, since it is only present in our diet in “blue” fish, salmon and tuna, and deficiency states
can easily occur.
Concentration & attention support: high dosages of Omega-3 DHA are recommended if you
want to reinforce cognitive and learning processes.
Adults with neurodegenerative disorders: Omega-3 DHA offer great support in disorders such as
Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s etc.
Traumatic brain injury: after a stroke, accident or concussion, Omega-3 EPA + Omega-3 DHA will
help a faster recovery.
Visual health
Omega-3 DHA is essential for the proper functioning of visual cells (photoreceptors), constituting
a key nutrient. In addition, at least 50% of the macula, the central area of the retina, which is
responsible for our sharp vision, is made up of Omega-3 DHA, so a correct supply of Omega-3
DHA will contribute positively to maintaining our vision in normal conditions.
On the other hand, in addition to the retina, Omega-3 DHA is an important nutrient for the ocular
surface, where other types of alterations can also occur (dry eye, ulcers, herpes, ….).
Omega-3 DHA in sports
Many sports, by their nature, require concentration, mental speed and visual acuity and,
therefore, given the importance of Omega-3 DHA at the brain and visual level, it is an essential
nutrient for the optimal performance of these sports.
DHA in cardiovascular health
Numerous studies support the importance of Omega-3 as a support for cardiovascular health.
In this sense, both Omega-3 EPA and Omega-3 DHA promote cardiovascular health, although
each fatty acid does so by different mechanisms of action. Omega-3 DHA helps to maintain
normal blood triglyceride levels, normal blood pressure and, together with Omega-3 EPA,
contributes to normal heart function.
